Ground cherries

No, they're not cherries beaten into a pulp. Kenneth's uncle bought these organic ground cherries (ground the noun, not ground the verb) while showing us around Cruickston, an area where he used to spend his long weekends while studying near Toronto. The Cruickston property was donated for conservation by the family of Biff, Kenneth's uncle's good friend, a long time ago. That gift has helped to create a nice, big green area just off a major highway, like a breath of fresh air in a kitchen that's frying belacan (think you can come up with a better metaphor?). Anyway, about those cherries: They were refreshingly sweet and juicy, and were a great snack to have in the car as we drove to the Niagara Falls.
