One pot of gold

Guess what came in the mail the other day? We got a really nice care package from home, filled with mooncakes, ba gua and pork floss. It even had lanterns and lantern-brand candles to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with. There were also ingredients for making our own mooncakes! Those ingredients included flour and icing sugar in quite significant quantities, which we thought could easily have been mistaken for anthrax at customs. Indeed, Kenneth got a call from customs asking about the contents of the package. He apparently gave all the right answers, because everything came through OK.
The mooncakes included some from the Peach Garden restaurant in Singapore and some that were like a dau sa bia version of mooncakes. All quite interesting, but the mooncakes that took the cake were the ones from Singapore's Goodwood Park Hotel. The light lotus seed paste filling that they use is unbeatable!
We also learned the other day that eating mooncakes by slicing them into the thinnest slivers is the best way to savor the delicacy. Got that tip from Trevor the dough boy as a bunch of us ate mooncakes, drank Chinese tea and talked among ourselves. The Chinese tea, by the way, was tie guan yin, which transliterates into Iron Goddess of Mercy. Very power.
