Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Happy Chinese New Year! To celebrate, a few friends of ours gathered for a potluck dinner - it was such a feast! We had rice pilaf with sambal stingray, teriyaki chicken, eggy shrimp, fish curry, flounder, and really authentic luo han zhai/chap chai (mixed veggies). Dessert was aplenty too with ice jelly, choc truffles, greek delights, red dates, fruits, and warm, homemade pineapple tarts that melted in our mouths... Kenneth prepared yu sheng, literally a raw fish salad, but he improvised with smoked salmon strips. Other ingredients include shredded radish, carrots, cucumbers, pomelo, plum sauce, sesame seeds, 5 spice powder, ground peanuts, pickled ginger and frittered noodles - it was really quite a lot of work. Following tradition, the party tossed the salad together with chopsticks for good luck and fortune in the year ahead. Here's wishing everyone good health, good food and happiness!

Seventh day of the new year
The seventh day traditionally is known as the common man's birthday, the day when everyone grows one year older. It is also the day when tossed fish salad, yusheng, is eaten. People get together to toss the colourful salad and make wishes for continued wealth and prosperity.
